Here's something neat I found.

I saw the guys this article is talking about on 20/20. Their proposal is to inject the stratosphere with sulfur dioxide. This would reflect a certain amount of sunlight away from earth and counteract global warming. In six months we could have things back to pre industrial levels with absolutely no change in lifestyle. The rig they proposed using was basically a garden hose held aloft by helium baloons. They called it the Stratoshield.
The downside, they admitted, was acid rain. That's a lot easier to deal with than worldwide climate change. And it's a whole lot easier to shoot a garden hose up into the sky than to retool our economy and reinvent civilization on a global scale.
It's interesting how massive problems often have simple solutions.
